Importance of the Greek diet

The famous Mediterranean diet has its roots deep in ancient times and was born in the Mediterranean countries. Its main representative is Greece where it was greatly developed.

Since ancient Greek times the basis of Mediterranean diet was set, which is comprised by the three basic ingredients of the daily nutrition of the ancient Greeks: cereals, wine and extra virgin olive oil.

Its basic principles are:

• High consumption of food rich in fibers: fruits, vegetables, cereals and legumes.
• Olive oil for cooking that replaces all other vegetable oils and fats.
• The everyday consumption of small quantities of dairy products.
• The weekly consumption of fish rich in Ω-3 fats and of poultry.
• The weekly consumption of sugar and eggs.
• The consumption of red meat only a few times per month.
